Birdwatching at El Pilar & Spanish Lookout

special interest     moderate

12 miles out of San Ignacio town, we find the ancient Mayan city site of El Pilar. Archeological work is ongoing at the site, but care has been taken to preserve the jungle habitat, making it a must-see destination for serious birders as well as wildlife enthusiasts. With several nature trails on the site, guests have the opportunity to spot a wide range of birds such as parrots, toucans and even Scarlet Macaws sightings. Due to its proximity to, and abundance of water sources, there are also other wildlife to spot in the area, such as the Tapir, armadillo, sloths, deer and wild cats. Head to the wetland at Spanish Lookout after for more birding opportunities, before returning to San Ignacio or Black Rock for lunch.
